“Mental Health First Aid” is an 8-hour, public certification, educational program. It offers its participants mental health literacy skills – though it goes into some psychological theory, it’s, ultimately, practical training. It can support us all in understanding the value of listening actively and non-judgmentally, for example. And in these polarizing times, we can all probably stand to brush up our listening skills! It highlights the values of acceptance, empathy, and being genuine; we like to call it the ideal, psycho-emotional toolkit for 2021. It might have been optional in 2019 – yet, it is necessary for 2020 and beyond!  

That being expressed, along with supporting its participants in refining crucial, soft skills, it also trains its participants to respond appropriately when a situation has gone from a mental health challenge to a mental health crisis. One of its strengths is that MHFA can be utilized across the spectrum of human experience and behavior. We don’t have to reserve its use for urgent situations – we can also apply it when someone is just having a tough week or is perhaps in the early stages of developing a mental illness. “Mental Health First Aid” also supports its participants in understanding the difference between issues and illnesses. 

Further, this is excellent training to have under one’s belt if one is looking to continue their education and/or shift jobs...it can even be useful in deciding whether or not someone wants to move into the field of mental health, by way of a career start or change. Once participants move through the curriculum and complete two simple, online course evaluations and two simple, online quizzes, then they will become certified. FYI, certification is good for three years, from the date of it being issued. During those three years, a graduate has the right to state that they're “Mental Health First Aid” certified on a cover letter, resume, and/or LinkedIn profile page. 

Lastly, this program has been endorsed by multiple, well-recognized figures, including former First lady Michelle Obama and singer/dancer Lady Gaga. Feel free to spread the word – the more people trained, the better, so we can co-create a safe, more emotionally intelligent world – together.
